About Kitties, Pins and KittyPins.com
Curtiss Olson began working in copper foil stained glass in 1978. After seeing a demonstration on fused glass in 1983, he switched directions (as he’s been known to do) and took classes at the Fusing Ranch and Multnomah Art Center in Portland, Oregon, and later at the Portcon Glass Show in Seattle, Washington.
Today, Curtiss owns and works out of the Bad Attitude Art Glass Company in Portland, Oregon, where he specializes in fused glass (or as we like to say con-fused glass) creating unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted glass masks, glass trays, and of course everyone’s favorites, glass pins (in the Kitty and Star form for now), which we fondly refer to as Glasswear.
Curtiss Olson, the man — THE artist — behind the Kitty (and the Star), specializing in fused glass art, or as we fondly say, "specializing in con-fused art."
At left, Curtiss works away at the glass grinder.
What about the man, the ar-TeestT, you say? Curtiss can be easily recognized by his disheveled (Einstein-like) white-gray hair and/or the occasional dawning of a jester’s hat (when the mood finds him). Or maybe you’ll find him on the road, cruising…at his own pace…behind the wheel of a ’36 Ford coupe, '50 International Pickup, '48 Ford Super Deluxe sedan, or maybe even an old ’38 Plymouth sedan delivery van. (Most are road safe and he does have a license to drive — so he says.)

It is not hard to see that his personality is reflected in his work: colorful, unusual (understatement), bizarre (bigger understatement), and of course...one-of-kind. Oh, and did we say colorful…? Oh yeah. Curtiss’ glass art pieces — outside of the Kitty Pins and Star Pins — are often named after friends or even strangers that he encounters on the street, giving them each a personal touch beyond their already one-of-a-kind status. If you ever run into Curtiss, don’t sweat it, he’s fairly harmless, although a bit out there, but hold judgment, enjoy the occasion, and you might just find an art piece named after you.
Kitty Pin Anatomy
We ain’t talkin’ any old glass pin or magnet here. These Kitty Pins, Kitty Magnets, Star Pins and Star Magnets are well conceived.
From the glass quality, its thickness, to the glue that holds a well-balanced pin or magnet on the backs, Curtiss takes care in using quality components that are positioned for proper wear. The higher priced pin backs are precisely placed in a select locale on the Kitty Pin and Star Pin backs to create less drag…or in this case, less sag. Nobody wants to wear glass jewelry that pulls their shirt down to their belly button. And what good is it if the art piece leans so far forward that you can't see it to enjoy. Not here. These Kittys and Stars are built to show. Otherwise, how will those smiles be passed along.
Keep on smilin’.
